Clothes designer Alice is married with kids. Celebrity hairstylist Steve is divorced, but has a French Bulldog called Crosby. The pair also happen to have been close friends since meeting at the Hacienda 30 years ago.
But all that changes when Steve (Jemaine Clement) sleeps with a woman half his age – unfortunately she’s also Alice’s (Nicola Walker) daughter Izzy (Yali Topol Margalith)! The betrayal shatters their once close bond, leaving Alice determined to sabotage the new romance – but will that save her friendship?
Who stars in Alice And Steve?
Nicola Walker as Alice Asher

Irreverent, impulsive and funny, Alice is a successful clothes designer, loving wife to teacher Daniel (Joel Fry), and a loyal friend. However, when best friend Steve (Jemaine Clement) sleeps with her daughter Izzy (Yali Topol Margalith), Alice shifts into fiercely protective mother mode.
‘She's fallible, outspoken, easy to upset, quick to judge, but quick to apologise,’ says Nicola Walker. ‘She's someone I recognised. I know women like this, and I don't see them on television very often. She has all the faults a real person has, with all the glorious and appalling things we try to hide. But Alice is less good at hiding the faults in her nature because the situation is so extreme, and those faults are on a clear display.’
You’ll have seen Nicola Walker recently as lawyer Hannah Stern in The Split (2018-24), DI Annika Strandhed in Annika (2021-23), and DCI Cassie Stuart in Unforgotten (2015-21). A regular on TV since the 1990s, she also starred as Ruth Evershed in Spooks (2003-11), and has also worked in theatre, film and radio – including voicing Doctor Who companion Liv Chenka.
Jemaine Clement as Steve Wild

Celebrity hairstylist Steve is funny and charming but likes to avoid responsibility. Alice (Nicola Walker) is his best friend and although they once dated, the relationship is platonic. However, when he has a chance at love with Izzy (Yali Topol Margalith), he’s torn over his loyalty to Alice…
‘The premise is so fun,’ says Jemaine Clement. ‘I love telling people the situation and the story, and they always gasp or they're intrigued. Their faces are shocked and excited. And I was the same when I read what it was about. The scripts are pretty funny and there's lots of drama in it. I'm not used to doing such dramatic things. The tension is huge at times, and then it's funny again. I like the way it moves around between those two states.’
New Zealander Jemaine Clement’s recent TV credits include Oliver in Plum (2024) and Pure Evil in Time Bandits (2024), while among his film roles have been Dr Garvin in Avatar: Fire And Ash (2025) and Alton Appleton in M3GAN 2.0. He’s also known for his work with Bret McKenzie as musical duo Flight Of The Conchords which saw them release records and create an Emmy-nominated comedy series of the same name.
Yali Topol Margalith as Izzy Asher

Clever, funny and opinionated, student Izzy falls in love easily although she’s recently split from her boyfriend and moves back home for a while. That’s where she bumps into Steve (Jemaine Clement) when he’s staying over after he and Alice (Nicola Walker) have been to a funeral.
‘It's hard to look at her from an outside perspective, because she is like a version of me,’ says Yali Topol Margalith. ‘If I was in her position, doing what she does and saying the words that she does, that's how I would do it. She's very strong, and she knows that she deserves the best, but she doesn't know what she wants. That's her conflict. She's doing a Master's degree in psychology, so she’s super smart. And she's a hopeless romantic.’
Israeli actress Yali Topol Margalith is known for playing Lauren Gibson in A Good Girl’s Guide To Murder (2024-26), Mirab in House Of David (2025) and Cilka in The Tattooist Of Auschwitz (2024). She also starred as Emily Palmer in the movie Finding Emily (2026). Acting runs in the family for Yali – her mum Adi is also an actress, while her grandfather Chaim Topol played Tevye in Fiddler On The Roof (1971).
Joel Fry as Daniel

Alice’s (Nicola Walker) devoted husband and a music teacher, Daniel (Joel Fry) is very much the peacemaker. However, he begins to have doubts following a school trip…
Joel Fry’s recent appearances include Trev Simpkins in Doctor Who (2024), and Frenchie in Our Flag Means Death (2022-23). On film he’s played Patrick Calder in The Queen Mary (2023), Hugh in Bank Of Dave (2023) and Jasper in Cruella (2021).
His best-known roles include Darren in White Van Man (2011-12), Karl Marx in Twenty Twelve (2012), a role he reprised in W1A (2014-17), Stylax in Plebs (2013-16) and Hizdahr zo Loraq in Game Of Thrones (2014-15).
Tyrese Eaton-Dyce as Dom

Alice’s (Nicola Walker) sensitive teenage son Dom is mortified by his family and has a serious crush on Rome (Eilidh Fisher).
Tyrese Eaton-Dyce made his TV debut as Adrian Dixon in an episode of Doctors (2023) and also played Jordan in Sherwood (2024).
Eilidh Fisher as Rome
Confident and vulnerable, Rome (Eilidh Fisher) often leaves others stuttering for words. Dom’s (Tyrese Eaton-Dyce) also desperate to impress them – something that they seem pleased about.
Originally from Stronsay in the Orkney Islands, Eilidh Fisher studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Los Angeles. The training paid off and you’ll have spotted her as Evie Galloway in Dope Girls (2025) and as Bailey in The Power (2023).
Other notable roles include Moira Suter in The English Game, about the origins of football in Victorian England, and as Sister Meg in the movie Consecration (2023), and as Bible Group Evie in The Outrun (2024).
Marcia Warren as Val

Alice’s (Nicola Walker) eccentric mum Val is fond of a glass of rosé and isn’t afraid to say what’s on her mind. She also likes dispensing outrageous advice.
Two-time Olivier Award-winner Marcia Warren appeared in the West End during the 1960s, but she’s also been a familiar face on TV since then. She played Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother in The Crown (2022-23) and Mrs Boggle in Agatha Raisin (2014-21).
She’s also known for starring as Vera Botting in No Place Like Home (1983-86), Angela Wakefield in Dangerfield (1996-98), Penelope in Vicious (2013-16).
Lydia Wilson as Marni

Outgoing Marni (Lydia Wilson) works at the same school as Daniel (Joel Fry) and is determined to get him out of his shell. She has a passion for opera, the England football team – and isn’t afraid to express her desires…
Lydia Wilson was Sonja in Nine Bodies In A Mexican Morgue (2025), June Holmes in Funny Woman (2024), and Sara Thompson in The Swarm (2023). Other notable roles include Eve in Flack (2019-20), Matilda Gray in Requiem (2018), and Mimi Morton in Ripper Street (2014-16). She also played Kalara in the movie Star Trek Beyond (2016).
Lou Sanders as Nancy
Nancy knows all about Alice (Nicola Walker) and Steve’s (Jemaine Clement) childish side – after all she was once married to the celebrity crimper. These days though the only thing connecting her to her ex-husband is Crosby – but will she be dragged into the mess that he’s created?
Stand-up comic Lou Sanders is a familiar face on comedy panel shows including QI (2020-25), Would I Lie To You? (2021-26), Mel Giedroyc: Unforgivable (2021-24). She also recently appeared in The Way Out (2026), where two teams of comedians attempted to break out of escape rooms. She won the eighth series of Taskmaster in 2019 and was a contestant in Dancing On Ice in 2024.
What inspired Alice And Steve?
The comedy was written and created by Sophie Goodhart, who has also penned episodes of Sex Education (2019-21) and Rivals (2024-26).
‘The inspiration came from several places,’ explains Sophie Goodhart. ‘Although I have a few Steves in my life, I do have a very good friend called Steve. Once, when Steve was single and going out with much younger women, he made this very jokey remark about my daughter, which I thought was a great premise for a show.
'I'd also been wanting to write a character in their early fifties, looking at how hard it is going from thinking that you are the relevant generation to realising you’re not. That came from me dancing and drinking at a relative’s wedding, thinking I was being hilarious. There was talk about going on to a club, but no one wanted me to come. And I also remembered going shopping with my mum when I was 18 and she was 50 and the shop assistant just ignored my mum. That shift into being older has been something I've wanted to write about for a while. I was on Sex Education for so long, and I really enjoy writing older characters now.’
Where can I watch Alice And Steve?
All six episodes are available to watch on Disney+ from Monday 8 June.
A big fan of comedy, Seinfeld, Curb Your Enthusiasm and W1A are guaranteed to have Nick Fiaca chuckling. He also loves a good detective drama with California PI Jim Rockford from the iconic The Rockford Files topping his list of favourite sleuths. He also boldly dips into the Star Trek universe when he feels like a new enterprise, and loves a good history series.
