A new New Romantic!

04 March 2010
Boy GeorgeIt’s late afternoon and flecks of snow pepper the fading late afternoon light in a Salford side street. Standing by a transit van and unloading gear is a familiar-looking figure for anyone old enough to remember the Eighties. Wearing red lipstick, make up over his eyes and cheeks, and sporting a grey jacket, black trousers, and white purple patterned shirt, unknown actor Douglas Booth is recreating Boy George’s iconic look for a BBC drama about the early days of the Culture Club star called Worried About The Boy. ...

At home with John Barrowman

9 February 2010

When TV channel Watch told us they were re-running last year’s Torchwood: Children Of Earth (in which a mysterious alien menace takes mental possession of every child on the planet) we saw – at last! – an opportunity to finagle an invitation to John ‘Captain Jack’ Barrowman’s home. In the MasterChef kitchen

In the MasterChef kitchen

9 February 2010

To MasterChef’s iconic kitchen in central London on the first day of January’s heavy snowfall in the capital. Even though MasterChef is now on its sixth series, hosts John Torode and Gregg Wallace’s enthusiasm for all things foodie is undimmed – there’s barely the chance to get a question in edgeways during our 40-minute chat. To kick off, I asked Gregg how he feels at the beginning of a series, which goes on for eight weeks. ...

Ugly Betty's Justin comes to town!

6 January 2010

London with its fabulous shopping and West End theatres is just the sort of place that Ugly Betty’s camp Justin Suarez would love. But although Betty’s fashion-loving nephew Justin wasn’t in town, American Mark Indelicato who plays him, was in the capital to see in the new year with his parents. ...

Ashes To Ashes set visit November 2009

13 November 2009

The rain was slanting down on the industrial estate in Bermondsey, South London, which houses Kudos Productions, when I arrived to interview some of the cast of Ashes To Ashes. Despite the rather uninspiring environment, Kudos are the people behind slick, sharp and ever-so-slightly sexy shows like Spooks, Hustle, Life On Mars and Ashes To Ashes. The cast and crew are almost halfway through filming the third – and final – series, and interviews must be slotted in between scenes. First up is Montserrat Lombard, who plays Sharon ‘Shaz’ Granger. ...

Survivors press screening, October 2009

23 October 2009

With newspapers full of the renewed swine flu pandemic it was more than a little spooky to find ourselves at a press event for Survivors series 2. You’ll recall the first series, a re-imagining of the original Seventies show, began with a killer virus wiping out most of the population so the event, held in a hotel near Great Portland Street in London, couldn’t have been more apt! ...

The Sarah Jane Adventures press launch, September 2009

7 October 2009

A tin dog, a space rhino in jackboots, and hordes of excited kids… it could only be the launch of Series 3 of The Sarah Jane Adventures…The setting was London’s plush Soho Hotel and a group of journalists and their kids had been invited along for an exclusive screening of the series opener of SJA; a two-part story featuring an evil life form called Androvax who is being pursued by a platoon of rhino-like Judoon, a kind of intergalactic police force first seen in Doctor Who. ...

On set with the Hustle crew on 22 September

23 September 2009

On the train home from Birmingham and a visit to the set of Hustle, where the team are filming series six of the BBC1 show about ‘grifting’. Yours truly got to meet the cast, and don’t mind telling you that Adrian Lester (aka Mickey Brooks) is sexier than he looks on screen, Robert Glenister (Ash) looks younger (and very smart in a blue suit which brought out the colour of his eyes), and Kelly Adams (Emma) really does look like Kylie Minogue. ...

The launch of Criminal Justice, series 2, London, September 16th

17 September 2009

To London’s Soho last night to the launch of the brand new series of BBC1’s Criminal Justice. You might recall almost a year ago the first series of this hard-hitting drama, which starred Ben Whishaw as a young man who wakes up next to the dead body of the girl he picked up. In his panic he fled the scene, but the law soon catches up with him and so begins his nightmare passage through the deeply flawed British justice system. ...

2009 TV Quick & TV Choice Awards

11 September 2009

The TVQuick & TVChoice Awards is naturally our favourite night of the year. That’s not to say it’s not exhausting, because although we get to mingle with the cream of the TV world, we also organise it all ourselves which means we’re never off duty (though it is possible to slip in a few glasses of wine). We have to make sure all the presenters and winners turn up on the night, or there’s no show. Thankfully, all were present and correct. This year was a bumper year, and we even had Peter Andre reporting for This Morning as the guests filed in. ...
