TVChoice Awards 2010
It was another glittering and star-studded night at London's Dorchester hotel as some of telly's biggest names turned out for the TVChoice Awards 2010.
Emmerdale and EastEnders were among the winners during the ceremony hosted by comedy star Alexander Armstrong.
The Road To Coronation Street
Young scriptwriter Tony Warren is struggling to breathe life into Biggles, ITV’s adventure series for boys. It’s 1960 and Warren is dreaming about a new serial focusing on the ordinary people from the Manchester back street he knew as a boy. Eventually, he takes his idea to Granada Television bigwigs, who have major reservations.
This new one-off drama (part of BBC4’s Planet North season) shows how Warren’s dream was turned into reality and how he created such legendary characters as tart-with-a-heart Elsie Tanner, battle-axe Ena Sharples and snobbish Rovers Return landlady Annie Walker.
Merlin
Our last trip to the realm of King Uther ended with Camelot in ruins after the Great Dragon was set free by Merlin. But, after discovering he was a Dragonlord, the young wizard was able to secretly tame the beast and send it away. However, he had another problem to deal with when he found out that Morgana was plotting against Uther — so he poisoned her. But she was saved by her half-sister Morgause and whisked away.
As we pick up the action in the third series, no one has heard from Morgana for a year…
Strictly Come Dancing
Saturday nights are about to get glam again as the glitter and sequins are brought out to adorn a new batch of famous faces who are set to strut their stuff across the BBC’s dancefloor.
This hour-long preview show will feature this year’s professional dancers and celebrity contestants all arriving on a red carpet together, and they will all be performing a dance routine. The competition itself though starts next month.
Emmerdale
Former The Royal star Natalie Anderson caused quite a stir when she joined Emmerdale last month as Leyla’s estranged sister Alicia — and banned her sibling from their mum’s funeral! And while viewers were left wondering about the cause of the tension between them, Leyla met up with her brother-in-law Justin behind Alicia’s back...
Jamie's American Food Revolution
Huntington, West Virginia, is a place that few people had heard of until it was officially declared the unhealthiest city in America. The soaring rates of diabetes and heart disease, plus the fact that half the adults are suffering from obesity, won Huntington this dubious honour. It also made the city Jamie Oliver’s obvious choice from which to begin his mission to tackle the American obesity epidemic.
The Rob Brydon Show
We’ve had The Keith Barret Show and Rob Brydon’s Annually Retentive but now the Gavin & Stacey star gets the chance to be himself for a change as he hosts a new chat show.
The Rob Brydon Show on BBC2 is a mix of interviews, comedy, music and a line-up of impressive guests. The series features Stephen Fry, David Walliams, Ronnie Corbett, Terry Wogan and opera phenomenon Bryn Terfel.
Fellow Welshman Tom Jones, who helped Rob fulfil a lifelong dream by singing with him on Comic Relief’s No1 hit (Barry) Islands In The Stream, also appears.
The Young Ones
Six well-loved celebrities turn back time and relive 1975 for this new BBC series. But will the trip back to their glory days make them feel youthful again?
The stars spent a week cut off from the modern world, living together in a Seventies bubble at a country retreat.
Entertainer Lionel Blair, 78, had mixed feelings when he arrived and was shown to his room — a replica of his own bedroom from 1975, painstakingly recreated from a photograph.
Albert's Memorial
He made us laugh for decades as ducking and diving Del Boy. But for his latest role, David Jason plays a World War II veteran in touching drama Albert’s Memorial.
Commemorating the Battle of Britain, it tells the story of two old soldiers, Harry (Jason) and Frank (David Warner), who visit their dying friend Albert (Michael Jayston) in hospital who asks them to fulfil his last wish.
Grand Designs
With the economy still struggling, it’s great to have the ever-aspirational Grand Designs to look forward to, as eight families set out to build their dream homes.
‘The recession hasn’t really impacted on this series at all,’ says presenter Kevin McCloud. ‘Many of these projects were conceived and financed before the recession set in.’
